June UnLearn and Learn Workshop

Updated: May 29

Join us on June 19th, 2025 for CNAR's UnLearn & Learn Workshop, "Beyond the Numbers: Enhancing Purposeful Demographic Data Collection and Use by Regulators."

UnLearn and Learn June Workshop

CNAR’s UnLearn and Learn Series supports the "UnLearning" of biases or assumptions we unconsciously hold. These may be personal biases; they may also exist structurally in organizations, systems, and society. The series helps to identify blind spots and determine how to change practices.

Date: June 19, 2025

Time: 12:00 PM ET – 3:00 PM ET

Venue: Zoom (link to be sent out prior to event)

Whether you’re contemplating demographic data collection or have already embarked on the process and have results in hand, this UnLearn & Learn Workshop will provide helpful hints and tips about the intricacies of asking for, collecting, storing, analyzing and disseminating personal information about members, staff, and other communities of interest. The discussion will be positioned within the current global context of critical analysis and dismantling of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) programs and initiatives. Strategic considerations that regulators should contemplate will be highlighted.

Amorell Saunders N’Daw, Principal & Senior Advisor of Amorell & Co. Inc. will facilitate an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on effective ways to collect demographic data that is transparent, thoughtful, respectful and serves as an opportunity to enhance relationships with the regulator’s key audiences. Amorell has experience guiding and advising regulators, member organizations, and other institutions about how to use this critical strategic tool. During the session, participants will:

  • Explore the key steps needed to create an effective demographic data collection process

  • Reflect on the questions that every regulator should ask and answer about demographic data collection

  • Review demographic data collection principles

  • Receive strategic advice about timing of the process

  • Learn how to engage communities of interest

  • Unlearn assumptions about one’s willingness to share personal information

  • Consider how to use the data collected and how to communicate results transparently

The session will include polling questions, sample demographic data collection questions, and sample messaging for engaging those who will participate in the process and small group discussion.

In the second part of the workshop, a panel from the regulatory community will share and discuss insights from their organization’s journey in demographic data collection and explore issues that regulators need to consider in this work. Panelists are:

  • Rachel Gallo, Senior Policy & Projects Manager, British Columbia College of Oral Health Professions

  • Preeya Singh, Director of Professional Conduct, General Counsel and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario

  • Jane Willwerth, Equity & Access Analyst, Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society

The conversation will be facilitated by Hadi Karsoho, Director, Data & Research, College of Early Childhood Educators.
