CNAR Regulatory Roundtable July 2025: Evaluation of the Atlantic Physician Registry: Lessons for Multi-Jurisdictional Licensure

CNAR July 2025 Regulatory Roundtable

Join us on July 16th for another CNAR Regulatory Roundtable event!

The imposition of US tariffs in recent months amplified calls for reducing interprovincial barriers in the trade of goods and the mobility of people. Legislative changes were introduced and passed in some jurisdictions to shorten timelines and modify requirements under labour mobility. In this environment, regulators are looking at harmonization and collaboration all the while upholding standards.

Prior to the tariff turbulence of 2025, the regulatory bodies for physicians in the Atlantic provinces sought to support physician mobility and improve patient access to care through an Atlantic Physician Registry (AR). The AR was implemented in May 2023 and remains in place today.

In this CNAR Regulatory Roundtable session, presenters will share the findings from and evaluation of the AR, which was conducted in 2024-2025. The evaluation assessed the AR’s effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability in meeting its objectives of facilitating physician mobility and enhancing patient access to healthcare. A copy of the evaluation report is available here.

Attendees will learn about the AR’s successes and challenges, including improved regulatory collaboration and reduced barriers for physicians seeking to practice in multiple provinces. The session will highlight key lessons about the importance of regulatory cooperation, process simplification, and identify specific opportunities to strengthen and enhance the AR . While the initiative is a collaborative effort among regulators of physicians in Atlantic Canada, the evaluation findings and discussion will have insights for regulators of professions in and outside of the healthcare sector.

Presenters are:

  • Elizabeth Wenghofer, Professor, Faculty of Education and Health, Laurentian University

  • Stephanie Price, Executive Director, Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada (FMRAC)

This event is free to all CNAR members and $50 for non-members.
