In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, CNAR is extremely excited to announce that Rick Mercer will kick off our Annual National Conference event in Vancouver! Rick chronicles, satrizes, and ultimately celebrates all that is great and irreverent about this country. A national #1 bestselling author and the Governor General’s Award-winner for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, Rick is a comic and political satirist who knows exactly what matters to regular Canadians and what makes them laugh. Rick will open CNAR 2023’s first Conference day on October 17th (also see the October 16th pre-Conference workshop schedule below).

Please note: Rick Mercer's keynote will only be available to in-person attendees and will not be streamed or recorded, per his standard contract. Virtual attendees will have access to a special presentation during the keynote, which will be announced in the coming weeks. During the concurrent session blocks, virtual attendees will have access to one session (chosen by CNAR) which will be streamed from the Plenary during the live Conference. Lunch n' learns will not be streamed live. However, recordings of all concurrent sessions and lunch n' learns on the CNAR 2023 program will be made available to both virtual and in-person attendees after the Conference.

The Fundamentals of Regulation Workshop will appeal to anyone who is seeking to learn more about professional regulation in the Canadian context. This compact yet comprehensive program is designed to provide attendees with content that is both practical and informative, featuring presentations from experts in their respective fields in regulation.

Morning Half-Day Workshops (Running Concurrently)

2023 Master Class I: Advancing Your Journey in Truth and Reconciliation: Two-Eyed Seeing and Building Relationships AM - 8 am - 12 pm PT (Registrants can select this half-day session 'a la carte' or select a Full-Day Master Class Session Package which includes the AI session below.)

This workshop will support regulators in advancing in their journeys in truth and reconciliation. You will learn about two-eyed seeing - the interweaving of western and Indigenous worldviews - and how to implement it in your leadership philosophy and practice, within your organizations, and the professions you regulate. The second part of the workshop will feature a panel presentation about building relationships with Indigenous communities.

Human Rights Issues for Professional Regulatory Organizations - Understanding Obligations and Ensuring Compliance 8:30 am - 12 pm PT (Presented by Field Law)

Following a review of key principles, presenters will review a series of scenarios designed to assist regulators in being able to identify human rights "red flags" that commonly arise in the professional regulatory context. Working in small groups, participants will then engage in a discussion of the scenarios, and practice how to identify and apply the human rights principles discussed in the first part of the workshop. Presenters will also review each scenario and will provide tips on how to ensure that regulators comply with their human rights obligations, while still meeting their public protection mandate.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion throughout the Assessment Lifecycle – Key Considerations and Plan of Action 8:30 am - 12 pm PT (Presented by PSI Services)

The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to engage in a thoughtful discussion about DE&I considerations across each step in the assessment life cycle. By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to define components of DE&I and identify DE&I considerations throughout the exam development and delivery processes. Participants will also be able to identify stakeholder groups, engage in discussions on DE&I considerations in exam development, and apply learnings to their individualized work settings and organizations.

2023 Master Class II: Demystifying AI for Regulatory Leaders 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. PT (Registrants can select this half-day session 'a la carte' or select a Full-Day Master Class Session Package which includes the Truth and Reconciliation session above.)

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are currently inundating our social media feeds and headlining news stories. What do these advancements really mean for you as a regulator and the professions you regulate? This Master Class workshop will help regulatory leaders better understand AI and the current landscape. You will develop an increased understanding of the issues and trends regulators need to monitor and explore some of the key issues and considerations in the application of AI to regulator’s practices and processes and in the practice of professions.

A Regulator’s Role in Mental Health and Wellness 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. PT (Presented by Steinecke Maciura LeBlanc)

Increasingly, regulators have taken an active role in studying and addressing systemic mental heath challenges within their profession. In the first part of this workshop, speakers from various regulators will discuss their wellness initiatives, including national studies on the health of the profession, counseling and therapy services for practitioners, and tips for sustainable practise and avoiding burnout. In the second part of this workshop, speakers will share their experience navigating incapacity proceedings. Participants will be encouraged to share stories and strategies for balancing a regulator’s public interest mandate with the invasive and stressful experience for practitioners.

Curiosity Doesn’t Have to Kill the Cat, It Can Help You Get the Cream: How to Employ Engagement Tactics to Achieve Your Mandate 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. PT (Presented by Pivotal Research Inc.)

Regulating a profession or industry can sometimes feel like a game of cat and mouse, especially if you’re missing a critical purr in your decision making and planning. Insights from key stakeholders can help shape the way you regulate for the better. Discover useful frameworks and tools to untangle the cat’s cradle of opinions you’re bombarded by and effectively meet your mandate – so you can keep on being the cool cats you are. Academic Credential Evaluations Methodology: Key Lessons from World Education Services 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. PT (Presented by World Education Services)

This workshop will help you streamline your credential assessment process and make the most efficient and reliable licensing decisions for your institutions. Participants will hear about best practices and models which focuses on reducing barriers for internationally educated professionals. The workshop will be led by seasoned WES experts who will share information and respond to questions based on the most pertinent topics related to credential evaluation globally.
