January Virtual Discussion Event: Enhancing the Public Interest While Avoiding Dysfunction

During this presentation, "Enhancing the Public Interest While Avoiding Dysfunction: Public Members and Regulation of the Professions," our distinguished panel will explore whether recent trends to increase the number of public member representatives on regulatory bodies’ governing councils and committees enhance regulatory efficacy. This presentation was also featured at CNAR 2022 and inspired great interest and discussion among delegates.

The panel will explore changes to public member involvement in their professions and whether those changes have had a measurable impact on regulation. In order for increased public participation in regulation to be beneficial, regulators need to orient and train both the public and the registrant members of their councils and committees to work collaboratively in the public interest. This session will describe stumbling blocks to effective co-regulation with public member representatives and how to overcome them.
